Dunoon Primary School

Parental Involvement

We endeavour to work in partnership with all our Parents/carers, and the wider school community, to enhance teaching and learning within Dunoon Primary School.

The school encourages Parents/carers to be active in their child’s education through the following:

  • Personalised learning targets are shared at the beginning of each term so that families can support children in their learning.
  • An overview of whole class learning is shared with parents at the beginning of each term.
  • Pupil progress is reported to parents at the end of each term (December, March and June).  These reports record the achievements made in learning and attainment within Curriculum for Excellence levels.
  • Regular curriculum afternoons are held across the school year.  Each open afternoon has a specific focus, for example, Literacy, Numeracy or Health and Wellbeing.  This offers families the opportunity to spend time with their child in class and find out more about learning and teaching.
  • Parents Nights are held twice a year.  Parents/carers can discuss their child’s progress in school with the class teacher and review their achievements in their Learning Journey folder.
  • Dunoon Primary School also offers Family Learning opportunities throughout the year. On these occasions, families are asked to accompany their child in participating in after-school clubs to learn new skills.
  • Parents/carers are also encouraged to attend school events such as shows, sports events and special events such as family discos.
  • Families are regularly invited into assembly to celebrate achievements in school.

Information to Parents/carers is communicated primarily through email and letter. However, further information around school activities is also posted on our Facebook page and website.  On occasion when information has to be conveyed urgently, the school will contact Parents/carers by text or phone.

Homework

At present homework is given out in classes with expectations established by the class teacher.  These expectations are communicated by the teacher where instructions for completing homework tasks are shared.  For the majority of children, homework is shared and completed using Google Classroom.  There is an expectation of reading homework to be completed daily with other homework tasks shared and completed over the course of the school week.  We would encourage all our families to support pupils when it comes to homework.

Becoming Involved in School

The school values the important part that Parents/carers play in their children’s education and sees partnership with Parents/carers as an effective way of enhancing children’s achievements and promoting better school ethos and communication.

Our Parents/carers have, in the past, organised and helped with a variety of learning initiatives and activities across the school. Annually we work towards arranging After School Clubs and encourage parental involvement wherever possible.

Our Parents/carers offer wonderful support during school outings/trips, help with school sports, sales of work, concerts and in a variety of community enterprises. In the classroom situation too we are keen to utilise the skills, knowledge and talents of our Parents/carers; believing this input provides excellent home/school links and offers children learning in a real life context.

We have a long distinguished tradition of fund raising for good causes including our own school fund. We look forward to your continuing involvement in what we hope will be a mutually rewarding enterprise, namely the ongoing education of your child.
